Slattery's is one of my go-to places for a beer and a burger when I teach in Manhattan. Since I usually stay at the Courtyard 5th Avenue, it's just a short walk down to E36th St from E40th.
Smithwick's Irish Ale, for those evenings when you don't want a stout...
I started with the potato-and-leek soup, and some toasted baguette bread. Good soup, nice chunks of baked potato, chopped leeks you could taste.
The "Midtown Burger" - swiss, mozzarella, bacon, onion, mushrooms, and a little BBQ sauce, dressed and served with fries. This was total overkill, and in the best possible way. A couple of bites in and I needed a knife and fork to attack the burger properly.
Slattery's has some great bartenders, which is why I keep coming back. It's a big place, with seating downstairs and upstairs.
Good food, good beer, and a great view of the Empire State Building when you walk back to 5th Avenue.
